실패의 장소안에 퇴비 Com-post in the place of failure

The series ‘Compost in the Place of Failure’ was inspired by Donna Haraway’s book ‘Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene’. For a month-long exhibition at the alternative space Loop in Seoul, Kwon engaged the audience in a process of becoming a post-humanist composter (Com-post) instead of a post-humanist. Following an ‘audio guide’ provided by the artist, the audience is invited to sign a contract to make compost, and perform the processes of ‘looking at the potato with affection’, ‘looking at the flat and transparent capital’, ‘excavating the contract in a circle’, ‘removing and putting on gloves’, and ‘rotating the compost sculpture’. These processes are symbolic of women’s everyday reproductive labour. On the last day of the exhibition, the artist creates a ritual of sharing ‘potatoes that sprout without a drop of water’ and ‘sympoietic compost’ in which the audience becomes the subject of the art gallery in an era that speaks of the capital tax and the human tax.

‘실패의 장소안에 퇴비’ 시리즈는 ‘도나 해러워이’의 책 ‘Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene’에서 영감을 받아 구상되었다. 권은비 작가는 서울의 대안공간 루프에서 전시기간 1달동안 관객들과 포스트 휴머니즘 대신 퇴비 (Com-post)를 만드는 인간이 되어가는 과정을 만들었다. 관객은 작가가 제시한 ‘오디오 가이드’에 따라 퇴비를 만들기 위한 계약을 체결하고, ‘다정하게 감자를 바라보기’, ‘납작하고 투명한 자본을 주시하기’, ‘원을 그리며 계약서를 발굴하기’, ‘장갑을 빼고 다시 끼기’, ‘퇴비조형물을 회전시키기’의 과정을 수행하게 된다. 이러한 과정은 일종의 여성이 일상적으로 수행하는 재생산노동의 과정을 상징하는 것이기도 하다. 전시 마지막 날 작가는 자본세와 인류세를 말하는 시대에 미술관이라는 장소를 관객들이 주체가 되어 ‘물 한 방울 없이도 싹을 피워는 감자’와 ‘공산적(sympoietic) 퇴비’를 나눠 갖는 의례를 장소를 만든다.
